Swing versus slide

Manual, and when it is honestly the right call

If the gate opens less than daily, manual hardware done well, adjustable stainless hinges, a proper drop rod, a latch that does not fight you, beats a cheap automation package that will strand the gate half-open in three years.
Automation: what a good system includes
- The operator: swing-arm or slide motor rated for the gate's weight and duty cycle, with coastal-rated sealed electronics. Underspecified motors on heavy gates are the most common failure in this climate.
- Access control: keypad, remotes, phone app, or a combination; vehicle exit sensors on the inside.
- Safety: photo-eyes and entrapment protection to the UL 325 safety standard are required parts of a legitimate install, not options. A motorized gate is a machine that can close on a person, and the standard exists because they have.
- Power resilience: battery backup that runs the gate through an outage, plus a manual release, storm season makes both non-negotiable here.

Storms, salt, and the ten-year test
Gates fail at their moving parts, and South Florida attacks moving parts with salt and humidity. The ten-year survivors share the same spec: marine-grade hinges and rollers, stainless fasteners, sealed operator electronics, and a pre-storm routine, secure the gate open or disengage to manual before a named storm so the largest panel on the property is not fighting the wind.
